The book Writers in Cinema by Slobodan Šijan

The book Writers in Cinema by Slobodan Šijan shows, in its second and extended edition, through a whole series of literary creations, how much film as a medium has been a faithful companion of literature, ever since its inception. Slobodan Šijan wanted to show that there is no major writer in the region who was not influenced by film in one way or another and who did not later incorporate it into his literature. Ivo Andrić, Miloš Crnjanski, Danilo Kiš, Bora Ćosić, Vladimir Dedijer are just some of the greats whose texts in this anthology fascinate us in various ways. Exceptionally structured in eleven organic chapters, Šijan's book is an important interdisciplinary leap from the usual notion of the inferiority of film to literature. Until 1980, Šijan was actively engaged in painting, and crossed into cinematography in the mid-seventies through experimental film and television. He graduated in painting at the Academy of Fine Arts and in film directing at the Faculty of Dramatic Arts in Belgrade. He has published articles about film in domestic and foreign film magazines, and edited several books and publications about domestic and foreign filmmakers. In 2009, his seminal work titled Film Leaflet was published. During 1990 and 1991, Šijan was the director of the Yugoslav Cinematheque in Belgrade. He is a professor of film direction at the Faculty of Dramatic Arts in Belgrade.
