Pavo Marinković: To make a Bosnian pot, the poorest will bring onions, and the richest meat

On the fourth day of the 31st European Film Festival Palić, a press conference was held at the Grand Terrace on Tuesday, July 23. Speakers included DoP Csaba Bántó, actor Domokos Szabó, producer Vanja Sremac, director András Fésös and actor László Keszég, directors Pavo Marinković and Mette Carla Albrechtsen, Éva Demeter from the Alexandre Trauner Art/Film Festival in Szolnok, Mirona Radu, author of the "Her Story, Her Future - Empowering Women in the Film Industry" project, and Dragan Krstić, author of the book " Film in the Light of Aesthetics and Methodology of Teaching Philosophy".

Csaba Bántó, the director of photography for the film “Kalman’s Day” screened yesterday in the Official Selection program, expressed his happiness about being part of the film crew and working with director Szabolcs Hajdu. “I have been working with him for the past 10 years and I hope we will be able to do more projects together,” Bántó said. “From the very start, planned to shoot long takes, mainly because of the lengthy dialogues and text. We decided to let the viewers experience those frames with longer conversations”, he concluded.

Vanja Sremac, the executive producer of Runar Runarsson's film "When the Light Breaks", scheduled for the fourth festival day in the Official Selection, emphasized the importance of the film being shown in the "Un Certain Regard" program in Cannes for its further success. "Opening this program is a dream come true for all of us, and we couldn't wait to go there. After that, the possibilities grew, and everyone started asking about the film." Speaking about the film itself, Vanja Sremac said: "Visual expression is very important to Runar. He wanted to set this film over one day, from one sunset to the next, during the time of year when the days are long and the sun is low, which he knew would contribute to the film’s atmosphere. I think he really succeeded in that".

András Fésös, the director of the film "In the Face of Gravity", screened the previous evening in the Parallels and Encounters program, spoke about attending the European Film Festival Palić: "This is a very important festival for us, especially since it involves awards at the European level. We are very satisfied with the screening itself and the audience’s reaction." Fésös also addressed the topic of his film: "This is a taboo topic both here and in Europe in general. There are a large number of suicides, and it is not talked about openly. I think there should be much more discussion about this problem".

Pavo Marinković, the director of the film "Bosnian Pot", being screened as part of the Parallels and Encounters program on the fourth day of the festival, reflected on the reception of his film in Austria, where the film is set: "Austrian critics recognized the metaphorical nature of the film's title, and they were actually right. To make a Bosnian pot, the poorest will bring onions, and the richest will bring meat. This solidarity and kinship, which Europe practically lacks, is essential. We are becoming selfish, unsupportive, egocentric. This element is quite important and is especially recognized in the West". Pavo Marinković stated that this is a film about losing oneself, losers and ineptitude, adding that it is his most personal film. "I am not the main character Faruk, but there are great similarities," concluded the Croatian director.

On the fifth day of the festival, Wednesday, July 24, at the Summer Stage in Palić, “Andrea’s Love” by Manuel Martín Cuenca will be screened in the Official Selection at 9 p.m., followed by “Sons” by Gustav Möller at 11 p.m. In the Parallels and Encounters program at the Abazija Cinema in Palić, the schedule includes the films “Hesitation Wound” by Selman Nacar at 6 p.m. and “8 Views of Lake Biwa” by Marko Raat at 8 p.m.

The European Film Festival Palić has been supported by the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Serbia, the Provincial Secretariat for Culture, Public Information and Relations with Religious Communities, the City of Subotica, the European Union through the Creative Europe MEDIA program, as well as numerous friends and media partners.
