The jubilee 30th edition of the Palić European Film Festival will be held from July 15 to 21, 2023, while the rich pre-festival program begins on the first day of July. Over 150 film professionals from the country and abroad are expected at this year's Festival, and the Festival is pleased to announce the arrival of Margarethe von Trotta, winner of the 2004 Aleksandar Lifka Award, assigned by the Palić European Film Festival to filmmakers for their outstanding contribution to European cinema.
Margarethe von Trotta received the award in 2004 together with Serbian laureate Živorad Žika Mitrović. Margarethe von Trotta, born in 1942 in Berlin, is a German film director, screenwriter and actress. At young age she achieved a successful acting career in the films of famous German directors such as Reiner Werner Fassbinder and Volker Schlöndorff. She wrote numerous scripts for Schlöndorff's films, and in 1975 they together directed the film The Lost Honor of Katarina Blum (1975). After that, Von Trotta began to direct independently and became the most important and successful filmmaker of the New German Film. Her films emphasize strong female characters and are usually set in an important political context. She won the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival, the Lifetime Achievement Award at the European Film Awards, has two nominations for the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival as well as numerous other awards and nominations.
In the pre-festival program, as in previous years, films will be shown in five sections, so the audience can watch seven films within the Best of Europe and Europe4Kids programs. Immediately after that, the Homage program to the Aleksandar Lifka Award laureates will be shown on the big screen of the Subotica’s Eurocinema, while the Classics on the Square program will be held on the big screen in the heart of Subotica.
In the official program of the Festival on the Summer Stage, at the Abazija cinema in Palić, as well as in the Eurocinema and Aleksandar Lifka cinema theater in Subotica, more than 100 films will be shown in 11 sections and programs: Official Selection, Parallels and Encounters, Young Spirit, Country in Focus , New Hungarian film, New European Documentaries, Eco Dox, Homage program to the Underground Spirit Award laureate, EFA Shorts, Selection of films from the Zygmond Vilmoš Festival, selection of student films, presentation of two festivals (domestic and foreign), as well as several films as part of special screenings.
In addition to the film program, all Palić guests will be presented with a rich supporting program. Exhibitions dedicated to the history of EFF Palić, film posters and the great Serbian actor Mija Aleksić will be set up at the various Festival locations, together with book promotions, panel discussions and concerts.
As in previous years, activities intended for professionals are also planned: film critics workshop that gathers participants from 11 countries, a workshop intended for members of the MIOB network of European film festivals, as well as the summer conference of Serbian Network of Cinema Screeners, with the emphasis on European films.
This year, as part of the Palić European Film Festival, the AFIFS awards will be given for the best domestic film and the best film of Serbian minority production. Students directors from Serbia will have the opportunity to present their works and to meet film experts from different fields - the guests of the Festival.
