32nd European Film Festival Palić – Day 3
Screenings of "100 Liters of Gold" by Teemu Nikki and "Mirrors No. 3" by Christian Petzold on Day Three of the European Film Festival Palić
On the third day of the festival, Monday, July 21, the Summer Stage in Palić will feature films from the Official Selection program, starting at 9 p.m. with "100 Liters of Gold" by Teemu Nikki, followed by "Mirrors No. 3" by Christian Petzold at 11 p.m.
"100 Liters of Gold" is set in a small village in southern Finland, where middle-aged sisters Taina and Pirkko have promised to spend several weeks brewing 100 liters of their famous, strong, homemade beer, sahti, for a family wedding. But their batch turns out to be so tasty that they end up drinking it all themselves. While battling massive hangovers, they embark on a series of hilarious misadventures, racing against time to brew a new batch, save the wedding, and restore their reputation as the best sahti-brewers in the village.
"Mirrors No. 3" follows Laura, who miraculously survives a car crash during a weekend trip to the countryside. Though physically unhurt, she is left deeply shaken and is taken in by a local woman who witnessed the accident and now cares for her with motherly devotion. When the woman’s husband and adult son also overcome their initial resistance to Laura's presence, the four of them gradually settle into a family-like routine – but soon they can no longer escape the shadows of their past.
The Parallels and Encounters competition program will feature “Comatogen” by Igor Cobileanski at 6 p.m., followed by “Thus Spoke the Wind” by Maria Rigel at 8 p.m., both at the Abazija Cinema.
“Comatogen” centers on Alina, a modest nurse who supports her 22-year-old son Radu while trying to rekindle an old romance with Pavel, a real estate agency director. Pavel's help in getting Radu a job at his firm takes a shocking turn when Radu steals €18,000 from his employer's office.
In “Thus Spoke the Wind”, Hayk, a withdrawn and aloof child, lives on a farm with his aunt Narine. Local teenagers mock him, considering him strange and weak. Narine raises him as her own son. After years abroad, Hayk’s mother Anahit, a beautiful woman in her late twenties, returns to the farm. The locals openly condemn her for defying social norms. Narine, unable to forgive Anahit for the shame brought upon their family, decides to take revenge.
The third day will also feature a final block in the Underground Spirit Award Laureate Homage program, dedicated to Austrian director Peter Tscherkassky. His short films “Parallel Space: Inter-View”, “Happy-End”, “The Exquisite Corpus”, along with “Singing in Oblivion” by Eve Heller, will be screened at the Abazija Cinema starting at 10 p.m.
In the New Hungarian Film section, “Tonight We Kill” by Péter Fazakas will be screened at 7 p.m. at the Eurocinema in Subotica. The story unfolds in an actors' retirement home after a mysterious death. Tivadar Tolnai, a forgotten actor best known for his detective role in a TV series, takes it upon himself to solve the case. As he methodically interrogates his fellow residents – all professional actors – he quickly realizes that identifying the culprit among such skilled liars will require the talents of a true detective.
The Eco Dox program will feature “The Mountain Won’t Move” by Petra Seliškar at 5 p.m. at the Lifka Art Cinema in Subotica. Zekir (20) and Zarif (16) are the eldest brothers in a family of shepherds who spend half the year in the Sar Mountains with their younger siblings, twenty shepherd dogs, and five hundred sheep, while their parents remain in the village. But when Zarif begins dreaming of a different life while scrolling through his smartphone, the question arises: if Zarif leaves, can Zekir continue their trade, which has been handed down to them over many generations and which they have begun to pass down to the younger ones?
In the New European Documentary Film program, “Moria Six” by Jennifer Mallmann will be screened at 7 p.m. at the Lifka Art Cinema. After Camp Moria on Lesbos burned down in September 2020, six refugees were controversially blamed for the destruction. The documentary focuses on the letter exchange between Hassan, one of the six convicted teenagers, and the director, highlighting Europe’s refugee policies and the systemic marginalization of migrants.
Day three will also feature screenings in the Young Spirit of Europe section. Short films “The Hour of Death” by Tomaž Gorkič, “Apartment 2A” by Gaja Möderndorfer, “Baby Money” by Matjaž Jamnik, “The Sea in Between” by Lun Sevnik, and “Xmas Tree” by Herman Karlsson will be shown at 11 p.m. at the Abazija Cinema.
As part of the joint FAFA Project selection, “Warm Film” by Dragan Jovićević will be screened at 5 p.m., followed by “Cactusman” by Olivér Rudolf at 7 p.m., both at the Abazija Cinema. Discussions with guests from these films will follow each screening.
The Special Screenings program will present “When the Phone Rang” by Iva Radivojević at 5 p.m. at Eurocinema. The film, winner of the MIOB New Vision Award from the MIOB Network Festival, will be shown at all festivals within the network.
Tickets for the Official Selection program are priced at 300 dinars for a one-day pass covering two films. They can be purchased at the Summer Stage box office starting at 8:00 p.m. In case of bad weather, films from the competition program will be shown at the Eurocinema (Open University of Subotica, 15 Tzar Jovan Nenad Square) at the scheduled times.
Tickets for the Parallels and Encounters program are 200 dinars for two films and can be purchased at the Abazija Cinema box office in Palić half an hour before the screening starts.
Admission to all other festival screenings is free!
