Set in the heart of Lancaster County, An American Pastoral explores the escalating tensions in Elizabethtown, Pennsylvania, where a once-quiet school board becomes the battleground for a far-right Christian movement seeking control. After months of heated debates over Covid policies, book bans, and budgets, long-serving incumbents step down amid threats and hostility. With five board seats up for grabs in 2023, the stakes couldn’t be higher. Three slates – one Democratic and two Republican – vie for power in a low-turnout off-year election. As national culture wars reach deep into small-town America, this film follows engaged citizens fighting to preserve the integrity of public education and democratic governance in their community.
