Afire, the second part of Petzold’s trilogy that began with Undine (2020), is about the possibility of being part of everything, and yet allowing life to slip through your fingers. In a house near the coast, Leon is finishing his book and Felix his art portfolio as a forest fire approaches them. Their plans are interrupted by Nadja and Devid, a couple who happened to be in the same place. Leon keeps trying to be professional, hiding his unfriendliness and seething with anger at the good mood and laughter of the other housemates. The arrival of Leon’s publisher brings additional unrest and all this at the moment when the sky turns a fiery red and the ash of the ash of the burnt surrounding forest begins to rain down on them.
