1991, the Adriatic coast, Montenegro. Alex (52), an under-established writer who works as a proofreader, lives in solitude by the sea, having deliberately cut all ties with his former life and seemingly unwilling to form new ones. One day, Dita (29), a former prostitute, appears unexpectedly, bringing with her a little girl named Romi (6). Despite Alex’s strong objections, Dita leaves Romi in his care and disappears. Determined not to take responsibility for the child, Alex sets off to the nearest city to hand her over to the Center for Social Work. Along the way, from the quiet house on the coast to the city, he tells Romi the story of his childhood – revealed through a series of expansive flashbacks. Back to...
