Lucien possesses the powers of a magnet and, inexplicably, he can attract all cutlery and all metal objects near him. However, his father forbids him to show this talent to anyone. He secretly dreams of the life of an entertainer and fantasizes about the moment that would lift him into that world. When the First World War breaks out, he meets a traveling circus, joins them and at the same time somehow becomes their member and a grown man who is able live independently. When life brings him back to his old ways, he comes home disappointed and realizes that nothing has remained the same. He has lost his special talent, he is no longer an entertainer, but at the same time he is unable to lead an ordinary life.
